Haiti! Where Was God?Our hearts bleed for the people of Haiti. The pathetic images of mangled bodies, piles of corpses and complete despair are haunting. Catholic, Protestant, Born-Again Christians and unbelievers all suffered the same fate. No wonder, many are asking if there is a God of love, why does He permit catastrophes? The Bible speaks of God crying during human tragedies—Jeremiah 9:17,18 JPS. It’s not that God literally cries. But the Bible uses the word "tears" of God to symbolize God’s ability to feel human suffering. God’s permission of calamities is difficult to understand. However, when tragedy happens to us personally, it might seem impossible to understand. Even Job, a faithful Prophet of God, was so mentally devastated in his multiple calamities that he accused God of trying to kill him —Job 30:20-24 NRSV. God’s answer gave Job such an insight into God’s power, wisdom and purposes that it completely overwhelmed Job. Yes, God feels from the depths of His heart the human suffering He permits. Although many have missed this cardinal teaching, God’s Word, the Bible, contains the only logical and soul-satisfying explanation of the age-old question—why does God permit evils? The answer so extols the wisdom, justice, love and power of God that like Job we will say, "I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you." Job 42:5 ESV. |
